Threshold hosts Business Secretary Vince Cable

Today we were visited at our Northampton offices by Secretary of State, Vince Cable, for an intimate conversation regarding Threshold’s future within a new and changing industry.

Threshold welcomed the recommendations outlined within the CIC Skillset report and described to the Minister some of the experiences we’ve had, and some of the challenges on the horizon, in response to key points laid out within the report.

Topics of the day included: emerging platforms for media distribution such as Internet Protocol Television and the challenges around protection of Intellectual Property, and ensuring creative SMEs are not inadvertently squeezed out of the distribution mechanisms by overly strict copyright protection strategies; creating a sector-ready workforce through talent development, meaningful internships, investment in young creatives outside of schools; and the important link between art and technology.

The Minister applauded our ambitions to broker relationships between business, the arts and the HE sector and was encouraged by our ‘embryonic’ relationship with The University of Northampton, and felt the sector ‘could do very well’ by nurturing the kinds of activities and ambitions we presented.

Following the meeting, he was given a hands-on experience of the 3D Cave within The University of Northampton’s NVision department, the only five sided immersive 3D environment in the country.

Intraference Screens at Frequency Festival 2011

As part of the upcoming Frequency Festival, Threshold Studios is screening ‘Intraference’ exclusively at the Usher Gallery in Lincoln.

Intraference harnesses the chaos of simple video feedback loops or isolates the inherent noise within audio-visual equipment, amplifying and manipulating it to create coherent signal. The tiniest movements of the artist leads to cascades of rapid change. The coherence is fragile, always in danger of collapse, but, with careful manipulation, the initial conditions of each AV set-up can lead to its own unique journey of morphogenesis, illustrating the space-time dynamics at work within chaotic systems.

We are the Future – Exhibition and Publication Launch

In December 2010 The Phoenix Youth Centre in Daventry became the best new gallery in town. Young artists transformed the main hall into a slick exhibition space and set up a lounge cinema to launch the We Are The Future book and photographic exhibition.

“We are the Future” saw Daventry’s creative future reach for their digital cameras and spray cans to present Daventry and themselves from a whole new angle. The book is available to the people of Northamptonshire through their local libraries (make sure and get it back on time though – no-one likes a fine) and the exhibition is now set to go off on a year long tour. Check back for updates of when and where. If you would be interested in finding out more about the work or maybe exhibiting it then just email
enquiries@thresholdstudios.tv

The murals are on permanent display throughout the town centre for details of where then just contact us on the email above and we’ll send you a map!

Film Nation Shorts Nomination Update – WE WON!

Clap clap clap clap clap and massive congratulations to the makers of “Our Journeys” that won the Film Nation Shorts Best Animation (17-19) sponsored by Panasonic.

The film was made by young film makers as part of Threshold’s “We are the Word” project in project 2009
The event was hosted by Simon Bird (Will McKenzie from the E4’s BAFTA-winning TV comedy series ‘The Inbetweeners’) and sports TV presenter Kirsty Gallacher. The young people received their award from none other than Olympic Medallist, Sharon Davies and April Pearson (Skins & Tormented) and if a shiny trophy, fancy ceremony and a few celebs weren’t enough the winning film makers will also see their films screened at iconic venues at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and showcased on the London 2012 Big Screens around the country. They also get to go to a 3D film-making masterclass held in the Panasonic Experience Centre at the renowned Pinewood Studios in February next year with a chance to make a movie on the latest Panasonic 3D equipment.
